Maria L Ruiz-Eriksen (b. 1999, Zürich, Switzerland) documents people in her environment seeking ways to care for long-distance relationships through the use of third spaces and digital platforms. Working from her personal archive, Ruiz-Eriksen incorporates multiplying elements and body parts such as eyes and mouths. The distortion addresses the instability of online communication, and miscommunication as an inevitable consequence when conversing through text and prerecorded messages. The work addresses scripted lifestyles that we inadvertently consume as we seek to maintain authentic relationships with those physically distant.
